Immune Boosting Naturally for Moms and Babies

As the colder months approach, keeping both you and your baby’s immune system strong is more important than ever. For pregnant women, taking proactive steps to maintain immunity can help ensure both you and your baby stay healthy throughout the season. Babies, with their developing immune systems, need special care as well. Here’s a naturopathic approach to supporting immunity during pregnancy and for your baby, using safe and natural methods.

1. Echinacea: A Gentle Herbal Support

Echinacea is a well-known herb that has been used for centuries to boost immunity and reduce the severity of cold symptoms. For pregnant women and postpartum, Echinacea can be safely used short-term to ward off illness. I used a low dose for prevention and used a higher dose when I came down with a slight cold. Echinacea kicked the virus out of my system so fast, and I was back on my feet in no time.

Tip: Opt for high-quality, organic Echinacea supplements and pair them with rest and hydration to maximize immune support. Note: You should not take herbs without consulting with a Naturopathic Doctor or Herbalist. You want to ensure that these changes in your supplements are not contraindicated for you.

2. Vitamin C: Essential for a Strong Immune System

Vitamin C is one of the most important vitamins for boosting immunity, especially during pregnancy. It can help protect against colds and shorten the duration of illnesses if you do catch something. Fortunately, Vitamin C is easy to incorporate into your diet. Citrus fruits, bell peppers, broccoli, and leafy greens are excellent sources of this powerful antioxidant.

In practise, I notice many women oversupplementing with Vitamin C. If you are taking a supplement, do not exceed 1000mg daily in pregnancy.

Tip: Try adding a fresh fruit smoothie or a vitamin C-rich salad (add berries or orange slices) to your daily meals to give your immune system a natural boost.

3. Vitamin D: Critical for Maternal and Baby Health

As the days get shorter, many people naturally experience a dip in their Vitamin D levels. Adequate Vitamin D is essential for immune function and is particularly important for both mother and baby during pregnancy. Aside from immunity, Vitamin D is necessary for the absorption and metabolism of calcium and phosphorus. Many studies are finding a connection between low serum vitamin D levels and an increased risk of certain types of cancers, autoimmune disease, neurological disease, insulin resistance, and cardiovascular disease. Deficiency with vitamin D is also related to preeclampsia.

Studies found women taking 4,000 IU of vitamin D daily had the greatest benefits in preventing preterm labor/births and infections. Vitamin D at this level is not only safe for you, but for your baby. The average prenatal vitamin only contains 400 IU of vitamin D, so additional supplementation should be taken daily.

Vitamin D is also essential to protect your babies immunity, while also supporting proper bone and teeth development. The recommended daily dose is minimum 400IU.

Tip: Have your healthcare provider check your Vitamin D levels and recommend the best dosage to maintain optimal health.

4. Probiotics: Gut Health Equals Immune Health

Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that help balance your gut flora, which plays a crucial role in immune function. Taking a high-quality probiotic during pregnancy not only supports your digestion but also strengthens your immune system. For infants, probiotics can help develop a healthy gut, which is vital for a strong immune system right from birth.

Tip: Look for probiotics that are specifically designed for pregnancy or infants. For example, HMF Maternity, HMF Baby B, HMF Natogen, BioGaiya, and Childrens Probio SAP. Yogurt, kefir, and fermented foods are also great natural sources of probiotics.

5. Breastfeeding: Nature’s Immune Boost for Babies

Breastfeeding is one of the best ways to naturally support your baby’s immune system. Breast milk is rich in antibodies that help protect your baby from infections and illnesses, providing them with a built-in defense system. Breastfed babies often experience fewer colds and other common illnesses compared to non-breastfed babies.

Tip: If you are breastfeeding, make sure to stay hydrated and nourish yourself with immune-boosting foods to support both your own and your baby’s health.

Final Thoughts

The immune system is a complex network that can be supported through natural methods like Echinacea, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, probiotics, and breastfeeding. By incorporating these immune-boosting strategies into your daily routine, you can protect both yourself and your baby as we enter the colder months.
